Just like Kate!

When I teach writing, I try to point out certain characteristics of writers that we read.  Kate DiCamillo is one of those authors.  In The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, one element she used was the magic of three.

And so did this author!

What did we eat?

As you can see from our photos, we ate pomegranate seeds.  Some students liked them.  There's definitely one who didn't.  Can you find that student?

Loving Reading

Every year, I hope to instill into the class, the love of reading...

I think it's happening for a few students...

Yes, it's recess and they are reading!

Details and Distractions

It doesn't take much to distract some of my students.

Can you see what distracted them yesterday?

It's a spider that was hanging from the ceiling and my students saw it across the room and were mesmerized.  Unfortunately, it looks more like a blur when I snapped the photo (it's just to the left of the j words) because it started to climb before it was removed from the room.

Never a dull moment!

In the morning...

A while ago, I moved away from giving the kids a worksheet in the morning to complete.  Some days I give them something, but most days, I just let this happen...

New Food

I love trying new foods and I love seeing kids learn they actually like them.

The red peppers were a hit!

Argh!!! - Late but worth it...

September 19 is National Talk Like a Pirate Day.

What do you do when you have a student who's obsessed with pirates?  Celebrate it!

These two boys had so many pirate clothing items that they shared with others.

Group work

I had to capture the class as they were sharing ideas for a game we were playing.  One group began a huddle and it caught on...

In Charge

I love putting kids in charge of the room.  They take care of moving pictures, organizing the library and drawers, and lately, taking care of checking out books.

I didn't think anything of it when I handed the kids my phone to take and delete photos.

Notice the selfie...

Thank you

Two big words.

They were said by this boy who got a quick lesson in character profiles after school. (He wanted to draw his characters at home.)

Why would I say no to that?

Amazing lesson today

Don't give up!!!

He wasn't sure he'd make it through but he kept going and finished the book.

Revising...

When we learn more, we can do more...and here's some evidence!

Check out these great writers and their revisions.  I had chatted with them, shared some ideas, and revision happened!

Enjoy

His first draft...
Now we can see his speech bubble!

Her first draft...

She added, "because I am a girly-girl."

He's proud...

Be Brave...

I was so impressed with some readers today.  One of our boys named our not right now books, "look it" books.  I am pretty sure his first grade teacher named these type of books and we can have one of these in our bins, but the rest of the books need to be books where we can be a story teller and sound like talking when we read.

Here are some brave readers that did some hard work today!  I am proud of them and I hope you are too!

Food!

It's the first of many posts of food that will come.  Today's food?  Guacamole!  Yum!  And I loved that many kids protested trying it...and wouldn't you know it?  They loved it!
